Destinations in the Allgäu

Lake Constance and Isle of Mainau

Lake Constance, one of the largest inland lakes in Europe, is only about 40 km and a 50-minute drive away from Oberstaufen.
There are many possibilities for spending a nice day. For example a trip along the German lakeside, through picturesque landscapes and charming towns such as Lindau, Nonnenhorn, Wasserburg or Meersburg. Or you start from Bregenz by ship towards Isle of Mainau. The famous flower island with southern flair attracts visitors with constantly new flowerage from spring to autumn. Back in Bregenz a visit of the impressing floating stage of the Bregenz Festival completes the day perfectly.

Royal Castles

Would you like to wander along the tracks of Fairy-tale King Ludwig II.? A visit of his fairy-tale castle Neuschwanstein – by the way, one of the most popular castles in Europe – gives you an impression of the lifestyle of the eccentric and unsociable king.

Ludwig II. spent his youth in the nearby castle Hohenschwangau.

Both castles, which are only about 65 km away from Oberstaufen, can be visited within a guided tour. Tickets are available at the ticket centre Hohenschwangau, which is located below the castles.
We recommend reserving the tickets online in advance (possible until 5 p.m. the day before at a small charge), to avoid lang waiting times on site.

Culinary pleasure and cheese

The region around Oberstaufen as well as the bordering Bregenzerwald are famous for their regional products, above all for excellent cheese specialities. There are several possibilities of getting an idea of the cheese's manufacture or even of assisting the production.

Cheese Dairy Steibis

For more than 100 years cheese specialities have been produced in the centre of Steibis. The cheese guides offer insights in the manufacture, each Tuesday at 10.30. a.m..

Cheese School Allgäu

Make your own cheese! In South Germany's only cheese school, at the village house in Thalkirchdorf, it takes about 2,5 hours until you hold your first self-made soft cheese in your hands. Thereby you are supported by master cheese maker Georg Gründl.

An unique and especially enjoyable experience, also because a cheese tasting with bread and hay liquor is included in the price.

Cheese Route Bregenzerwald

In cheese-autumn, from mid-September until mid-October, it's all about cheese in Bregenzerwald. At the alp market in Schwarzenberg, where the best alpine cheese is awarded or with the varied weekly programme with visits of alpine dairy and trade, farm guides, hikes and cheese culinary.
